AFM Saiful Amin (born 29 September 1971) is a Bangladeshi civil engineer, academic, and researcher. Amin served as chairman of the Board of Accreditation for Engineering and Technical Education (BAETE), Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh, where he contributed to Bangladesh’s full signatory status in the Washington Accord.[2] He also served as director of the BUET–Japan Institute of Disaster Prevention and Urban Safety (BUET-JIDPUS), where he led initiatives in disaster resilience and postgraduate education in risk reduction.[1]
Early life and education
Amin was born in Dhaka, Bangladesh, with ancestral origins in Chandpur. He completed his early education at Government Laboratory High School and Dhaka College.[1]
He obtained his Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in Civil Engineering from the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET). He later earned his Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Civil Engineering from Saitama University, Japan, in 2001.[1][3]
Academic and professional career
Amin joined the faculty of BUET and progressed through academic ranks to become a professor in the Department of Civil Engineering.[1] He has over two decades of experience in teaching and research.[1]
As director of BUET-JIDPUS, he introduced postgraduate programs in disaster risk reduction aimed at strengthening technical capacity in Bangladesh.[1] He also led earthquake-related research initiatives that contributed to national seismic design guidelines.[1]
In addition to his academic roles, Amin has contributed as a technical expert to major infrastructure projects in Bangladesh, including the Padma Bridge Rail Link and other bridge and structural systems.[1]

Amin’s research spans structural mechanics, material science, and earthquake engineering.[1] His work includes constitutive modeling of nonlinear materials, including hyperelasticity and viscoplasticity, research on high-damping rubber bearings for seismic isolation systems, studies on weathering steel, and work on structural health monitoring, bridge engineering, and non-destructive testing.[1]

As chairman of BAETE, Amin was involved in efforts to align Bangladesh’s engineering education system with international standards.[2] His leadership contributed to Bangladesh becoming a full signatory of the Washington Accord.[2] He has also been involved in curriculum development, accreditation processes, and engineering education reform initiatives.[4]
