AINOW Society is a nonprofit organization established in January 2025 in Skopje, North Macedonia. The organization focuses on artificial intelligence policy, digital education, and language technologies in the Western Balkans region. The Western Balkans Info Hub identifies the entity as the first artificial intelligence association in the region.[1]

The organization was established to address the governance gap and the scarcity of local language datasets in the Balkans. The entity advocates for digital regulation and develops resources for public use. The Council of Europe recognizes the contributions of the society regarding artificial intelligence regulation in media sectors.[2]
Research and Technology
The organization leads the development of MK-LLM, an open-source large language model for the Macedonian language.[3]
The entity conducts research on technology policy, information integrity, and ethics. This includes studies on Macedonian language datasets for artificial intelligence training and regional governance frameworks in Bosnia and Herzegovina.[4][5] The society collaborated on The Chatbot Version of Truth (2025), a study analyzing the spread of narratives through automated systems in the Western Balkans.[6] Other research focus areas include ethics and algorithmic bias.[7]
