Abantika Deka (born 1 January 1987) is an Indian former international badminton player, national junior team coach, and sports event organiser based in Bangalore, Karnataka. A native of Assam, she trained at the Prakash Padukone Badminton Academy under coaches Prakash Padukone and Vimal Kumar, and won 21 national titles and 10 international titles over the course of her playing career. She was ranked among the top two players in India and was a national team probable for the 2010 Commonwealth Games. In 2018, she represented India at the All England Badminton Championship in Birmingham.

After retiring from competitive play following a ligament injury, Deka moved into coaching and was a member of the official Indian coaching staff at the 2018 Badminton Asia Junior Championships in Jakarta, where the Indian squad achieved a historic result. She later founded Deka Events, described as India's only badminton-exclusive sports event management company, along with AD Badminton Academy and the Abantika Foundation, which promotes sports among underprivileged communities. Through Deka Events, she has organised a series of badminton tournaments for India's legal and medical communities, including the All India Judges Badminton Championship (2025), the Premier Law Badminton League, the National Bar & Bench Badminton Championship, and the Micro Badminton Cup for Doctors.
Early life and training
Abantika Deka was born on 1 January 1987 in Assam, India. She relocated to Bangalore to pursue badminton and trained at the Prakash Padukone Badminton Academy (PPBA), a centre established in 1994 by former Indian national champion Prakash Padukone. Her primary coach at the academy was Vimal Kumar, a recipient of the Dronacharya Award, India's highest honour for sports coaches.[1]
In 1999, Deka won the National Under-13 championship and finished as runner-up in the Under-16 girls' doubles at the National Championships held in Vijayawada.[2]
Playing career
Domestic career
Deka accumulated 21 national titles, including 18 titles at the Indian National Badminton Championships and major All India Ranking tournaments.[3] She was ranked in the top two in India across singles, doubles, and mixed doubles, and was among the national team probables for the 2010 Commonwealth Games.[4]
International career
In 2008, Deka competed at the Bahrain International Badminton Championships in mixed doubles, finishing third.[5] She went on to win 10 international titles over the course of her career.[3]
In 2018, she was selected to represent India at the All England Badminton Championship in Birmingham, United Kingdom, one of the oldest badminton tournaments in the world.[3]
Injury and retirement
Deka's playing career was interrupted by a serious ligament injury that required surgery, following which she retired from competitive play and subsequently transitioned into coaching and event management.[6]

Badminton Asia Junior Championships 2018
Deka served as a coach with the official Indian national junior team at the 2018 Badminton Asia Junior Championships, held from 14 to 22 July 2018 in Bintaro, South Tangerang, Indonesia. At the tournament, Lakshya Sen won the men's junior singles gold medal, becoming the first Indian to claim the title in 53 years.[7]
Career in event management
Deka founded Deka Events, a sports event management company based in Bengaluru, focused exclusively on badminton.[3] The company has organised badminton tournaments and events involving professional communities, including members of the legal and medical sectors.[8]
Deka Events operates in alignment with India's Fit India Movement and has organised events with the institutional support of the Ministry of Law and Justice, the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, the Ministry of External Affairs, the Department of Justice, the Supreme Court of India, and the Bar Council of India.[8]
