Sadeghi became persona non grata in 2025 when Australia expelled him and three officials after accusing Tehran of orchestrating antisemitic arson attacks in Sydney and Melbourne, which Iran denies.[5][6]
Australian Security Intelligence Organisation chief Mike Burgess said investigators found connections between the attacks and senior figures in Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps after a months-long probe. He said the IRGC concealed its role in the Sydney and Melbourne attacks by operating through a network of proxies.[7][8] This was the first ambassadorial expulsion by Australia since World War II.[9] Iran stated it will take "reciprocal action".[10]
Calls for Sadeghi's expulsion were also made in 2024 after he praised Hassan Nasrallah of Hezbollah in social media.[11]
