Article about German professor and researcher From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Alexander Scherrer (born 11 February 1976 in Neustadt an der Weinstraße) is a German Mathematician and Professor at Heidelberg University.

Life

Alexander Scherrer studied mathematics at Technical University of Kaiserslautern, graduated with a diploma in 2001 and obtained his doctorate in 2006[1]. Since 2001, he works at Fraunhofer Institute for Industrial Mathematics ITWM in various positions and conducts research in applied mathematics, mainly for the life sciences, and also in process engineering[2]. In 2006, he was a visiting postdoctoral researcher at Massachusetts General Hospital, and from 2006 until 2007 he was an associate lecturer at the Faculty of Mathematics at the Technical University of Kaiserslautern. In 2011, he was a lecturer at the Felix Klein Center for Mathematics[3][4]. In 2025, he was appointed to a full professorship at the Heidelberg University Faculty of Medicine in Mannheim and took up this position in 2026[5].

Work

At Fraunhofer ITWM, Alexander Scherrer initially conducted research into the optimization of radiation therapy plans[6]. The methods developed at ITWM were put into clinical use by Varian Medical Systems in the form of an innovative medical software for radiotherapy planning[7]. He was honoured as a member of the respective project groups for research projects on radiotherapy by the Donors' Association for the Promotion of Sciences and Humanities in Germany and the European Association of Research and Technology Organisations (EARTO)[8][9]. He also conducted research into process optimisation in chemical engineering[10][11]. His recent research at ITWM deals with AI for data analysis und decision support systems in the life sciences[12][13][14]. Here, he was a member of a research group whose project in digital medicine was recognised in a national innovation competition[15][16]. Another of his projects on AI in nursing reached the final round of an innovation competition organised by the Robert Bosch Foundation[17][18]. At Heidelberg University, Alexander Scherrer teaches, researches and develops applied AI in radio-oncology at the Mannheim Institute for Intelligent Systems in Medicine and in the environment of the University Hospital Mannheim[19].
