Alfredo Piwonka Gilabert (26 December 1887 – 17 March 1942) was a Chilean agricultural engineer and politician. A member of the Radical Party, he served as deputy[1] and later as senator,[2] and held several ministerial posts during the presidency of Arturo Alessandri.[3]

Biography

He was born in Osorno on 26 December 1887, the son of Ricardo Piwonka Richter and Sofía Gilabert Roselot. He married Elvira Moreno Fredes, and they had three daughters: Niní, María Elvira and July.[3]

He studied at the Liceo de Aplicación and later at the University of Chile, qualifying as an agricultural engineer. He devoted himself to agricultural and industrial activities. He owned the Cruz Roja mill in San Fernando and operated the estate Santa Adela in Teno.[3]

Political career

Piwonka joined the Radical Party in 1930 and remained a member until 1938.[3]

He was elected deputy for the commune of Caupolicán for the 1921–1924 legislative period.[3]

He was later elected senator for the 5th Provincial Grouping for the 1926–1934 period. During his senatorial tenure he served on the Standing Committees on Government; Agriculture, Mining, Industrial Development and Colonisation; and Internal Police.[3]

The 1932 socialist coup d'état led to the dissolution of the National Congress on 6 June 1932.[3]

Ministerial career

During the presidency of Arturo Alessandri he held several ministerial offices. He served as Minister of Development from 24 December 1932 to 8 May 1933. On 8 May 1933 he was appointed Minister of the Interior, a position he held until 19 April 1934.[3]

He also served simultaneously as acting Minister of Development between 8 and 9 May 1933, as Minister of Public Health from 8 May 1933 to 19 April 1934, and as acting Minister of Labour from 6 October to 8 November 1933.[3]

Other activities

He was a member of the University Delegation in the Department of Copiapó on 25 April 1892. He was also a member of the Club de La Unión from 1922 and of the Sociedad Nacional de Agricultura.[3]

He died in Santiago on 17 March 1942.[3]
