Draft:Amorphica Design Research Office

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Amorphica Design Research Office is an architectural and urban design firm with offices in San Diego, California and Tijuana, Baja California. Amorphica is most associated with being a global design practice, forwarding the ideas of responsive design intelligence and spatial self-sufficiency.[1]

Background

Amorphica was founded in 1999 as an emerging Architecture, Urban Design and Research collective studio focused on conceiving morphogenic urban spaces with the intent of provoking educational environments[2]. The firm quickly evolved to create designs for clients in a number of countries [3] with focus on "urban provocation" and "architectural regenerative intervention"[4].

Since its inception the firm grew rapidly and currently collaborates with architects, urban designers, researchers, anthropologists, and engineers in both the U.S. and Mexico.

Licensed in both California and Mexico, the firm operates in cross-border building economics[5], providing architectural design services for builders seeking to manage costs through the export of design packages across jurisdictions.

Influences and Industry Impact

Amorphica collaborators hail from such institutions as the Southern California Institute Of Architecture (SCI-Arc), the University Of London, Harvard Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, Universidad Iberoamericana, and Universidad Autonoma De Baja California, and include former protégés of Teddy Cruz. Alumni now sit on architectural boards in both California and Mexico. Since 2005, Amorphica Architects have lectured at several universities and international institutions including MIT, Harvard Graduate School of Design and Graduate School of Arts And Sciences, Columbia Graduate School of Architecture, Colegio de Arquitectos de la Ciudad de Mexico, Louisiana State University, UNLV, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Tec de Monterrey, and Universidad Autonoma de México.

In 2020, the firm was listed as a winner in the Design & Build Awards organized by Build Magazine, a program that recognizes firms in architecture, construction, and related disciplines[6].
