History
Google shifted the development cycle for Android 17, moving away from the traditional "Developer Preview" phase in favor of an earlier public beta release. This accelerated timeline is intended to align with hardware launches in the first half of the year.[citation needed]
Features
Build numbers
The initial Beta 1 release carries two primary build identifiers:[citation needed]
- CP21.260116.011.A1: For Pixel 6 through Pixel 7 series.
- CP21.260116.011.B1: For Pixel 8, 9, and 10 series, including Tablet and Fold models.
User interface
- Enhanced large screen support: Apps targeting Android 17 (API 37) are now required to be resizable, effectively eliminating "letterboxing" on tablets and foldables.[citation needed]
- Predictive Back 2.0: Refined animations for the predictive back gesture, providing more consistent previews of the preceding screen.[citation needed]
- Gemini integration: A new "screen shrink" animation when invoking the Gemini assistant via corner swipes.[citation needed]
Media and performance
- VVC (H.266) support: Native support for Versatile Video Coding, offering superior compression for high-resolution 8K video.[citation needed]
- Loudness Management API: A system-level tool to prevent sudden volume jumps when switching between different media applications.[citation needed]
- Camera improvements: Optimized transitions when switching between physical camera lenses (e.g., Wide to Ultra-wide) to reduce frame jitter.[citation needed]
- Generational garbage collection: An update to the Android Runtime (ART) that improves memory management efficiency and reduces system micro-stutter.[citation needed]
