Anthony Joseph Pluta III (born October 28, 1982) is an American former professional baseball player and coach. Drafted by the Houston Astros in the 2000 MLB Draft, he played for over a decade in Minor League Baseball before establishing a substantial coaching and academic career in British Columbia, Canada.

Playing Career

Pluta was born on October 28, 1982, in Visalia, California. A right-handed pitcher, he was selected by the Houston Astros in the 3rd round (97th overall) of the 2000 Major League Baseball Draft.[1][2][3].


Over his Minor League Baseball career, Pluta recorded 27 wins and 22 losses with an earned run average (ERA) of 5.77 across 349.2 innings, recording 329 strikeouts. His last known transaction was a minor-league contract assignment in 2010.[4]

Coaching and Academic Career

Since retiring from playing professionally, Pluta has established a substantial coaching and academic career in British Columbia and Canada.

Baseball Canada & National Team

Pluta joined the coaching staff of Baseball Canada's Women’s National Baseball Team program in 2021 as a guest coach. In 2022, he served as the team’s pitching coach for the five-game Friendship Series against the United States. He was appointed as Manager/Head Coach of the Canada Women’s National Baseball Team for 2023 and retained in that role for 2024.[5] [6][7]


Provincial & High-Performance Coaching (BC)

In 2021, Pluta was named co-Technical Director for the high-performance programs of Baseball BC. He served as the Provincial Technical Director and oversaw coach education and development across British Columbia.[8] For his efforts in leading coach-training (NCCP), he was awarded the annual Baseball Canada Coach Developer Award in 2020.[9] He also serves as a lead coach at the Island Training Centre, a large sport training facility on Vancouver Island, where he leads their baseball and softball coaching programs.[10][11]


Academic Career and Research

Pluta holds a Master of Science (MSc) in Kinesiology, which he completed after moving to Canada. His master’s thesis, completed in 2017 at the University of Victoria (UVic), was titled “Using background EEG to predict baseball batting performance”. His research resulted in a peer-reviewed journal article, of which he was the lead author, titled “Chasing the zone: Reduced beta power predicts baseball batting performance,” published in Neuroscience Letters in 2018.[12]. This academic research activity was also covered in a UVic news release and external media[13][14]


In Fall 2022, he was hired as a term-faculty member in the Centre for Sport and Exercise Education (CSEE) at Camosun College, where he teaches courses in the Sport Management program.[15][16]
