Anurag Kumar Srivastava, is an American electrical engineer and academic specializing in power systems, smart grids, and cyber-physical energy systems. Education and Early Career
Srivastava earned a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the Illinois Institute of Technology in 2005. He received an M.Tech. in Electrical Engineering (Control Systems) from the Indian Institute of Technology (BHU), Varananasi, in 1999. Prior to his doctoral studies, he worked as a Senior Research Associate at the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur from 1999 to 2001, and as a Research Fellow at the Asian Institute of Technology in Bangkok, Thailand, from 2000 to 2001.[1][2][3][4]
Academic Career
Following completion of his doctorate, Srivastava joined Mississippi State University as an Assistant Research Professor in 2005.[2]
In 2010, he joined Washington State University as an Assistant Professor. He was promoted to Associate Professor in 2015 and to Full Professor in 2021.[5] During his tenure at Washington State University, he founded and directed the Smart Grid Demonstration and Research Investigation Lab (SGDRIL).[6]
In 2021, he was appointed Raymond J. Lane Professor and Chair of the Lane Department of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering at West Virginia University.[7] In addition to his primary appointment, he holds concurrent positions as Adjunct Professor at Washington State University and Senior Research Scientist at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory.[8]
Research
Srivastava’s research focuses on data-driven and physics-informed approaches for cyber-resilient electric energy systems. His work has been supported by organizations including the U.S. Department of Energy and the National Science Foundation.[9]
His research includes studies on the resilience of power distribution systems with distributed energy resources, including the development of metrics to evaluate system performance during disturbance, response, and recovery phases. These include the Smart Grid Resilience and Analytics Lab (SG-REAL),[11] which supports research on grid resilience and data-driven analysis, and the Grid Operation Center Lab (GOLab),[12] a real-time simulation environment used for system operation and training. His work also involves the use of cyber-power testbeds, including hardware-in-the-loop systems, for evaluating security and resilience in electric power systems.[12]

Patents
Srivastava’s work includes collaborations with electric utilities, national laboratories, and power system equipment vendors related to power system monitoring and control.[10]
His contributions include methods for condition monitoring of circuit breakers developed in collaboration with Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories, associated with U.S. Patent No. 9,864,008.[13][18] He has also contributed to the development of testing and validation tools for phasor measurement units (PMUs), covered by U.S. Patent No. 9,910,081.[13][19] In addition, his work includes algorithms for real-time voltage stability monitoring in power systems, associated with U.S. Patent No. 9,876,352.[13][20]

He has also served as an IEEE Distinguished Lecturer for both the IEEE Power & Energy Society (since 2014) and the IEEE Industry Applications Society (since 2022).[29][9]
Conference Service
Srivastava has contributed to the organization of conferences and workshops in power systems and smart grid technologies. He served as conference chair of the International Conference on Smart Grid Synchronized Measurements and Analytics (SGSMA 2024) in Washington, D.C., and as technical co-chair for IEEE SmartGridComm symposia in 2021 and 2026.[30][31][32] He has also chaired the NSF-sponsored Data Analytics Workshop for Power Grid Resiliency (2018) and the North American Power Symposium (2014), and co-chaired the IEEE Workshop on Modeling and Simulation of Cyber-Physical Energy Systems (2016–2024).[33][34][35]
CIGRÉ Activities
Srivastava is a member of multiple working groups within the International Council on Large Electric Systems (CIGRÉ). His participation includes working groups focused on operational resilience (C2.25), power system resilience (C4.47), applications of artificial intelligence in the power industry (D2.52), voltage stability assessment (C4/C2.58), and wide-area monitoring and control (C2.18), reflecting involvement across technical, operational, and emerging-technology aspects of large-scale electric power systems.[36][37]
Editorial Service
Srivastava has served as an associate editor of IEEE Transactions on Industry Applications since 2019. He previously served as an associate editor of IEEE Transactions on Power Systems (2018–2021) and IEEE Transactions on Smart Grid (2015–2019). He has also served as a guest editor for IEEE special issues on cybersecurity, power system resilience, and renewable energy integration.[9]
