Biography

He started his classical piano training at age of four and discovered Jazz as a teenager.[1] Then he studied under musicologists Tzvi Keren and jazz trumpetist, accordionist and arranger Moshe Osherowitz, a.k.a. P. C., who is regarded among the pioneering Jazz musicians in Israel. He also followed courses at the Tel Aviv University Academy of Music, mostly under arranger Ilan Mochia’h. Ever since 1980 he’s been leading different jazz trios and other groups both in Israel[2][3] and Europe[4].

Among the great musicians he has played with are singer Edna Goren, bassist Eli Magen, Saxophonist Joel Frahm and many others. During this time, he released four albums as leader.

Influences

At the beginning of his professional activity, he was influenced[5] mainly by Israeli popular music composers and performers such as Matti Kaspi, Sasha Argov and Yoni Rechter, then by outstanding American musicians such as Keith Jarrett, Herbie Hancock and Chick Korea. In later years he was inspired by French pianist Michel Petrucciani and American pianist Fred Hersch. Yet his greatest influence is Bill Evans, whose style and personality exert a great fascination on him.

All of the albums he has released display mainly his own compositions, but each and every one of them contains a piece of Israeli pop music, mostly by Shalom Hanoch, Yoni Rechter or Alexander (Sasha) Argov, turned into a jazz creation[6].

His music, however, is not restrained to mainstream jazz. His Judeo-Spanish background attracted him to South-American and Caribbean music as well as Latin Jazz, with straight-forward melodic patterns[7] and rich harmonies, played with great emotion[8][9] and a delicate pianistic touch.
