Askhat Kuchinchirekov (Kazakh: Асхат Кучинчиреков; born 3 April 1982) is a Kazakh film director, screenwriter, actor, and producer. He was born in Kenes, Pavlodar Region, Kazakh SSR, Soviet Union (now Kazakhstan). He is best known for his directorial debut feature film Bauryna Salu (2023), which was selected as Kazakhstan's official submission for the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film.

Early life and education
Kuchinchirekov was born on 3 April 1982 in Kenes, Pavlodar Region, in the Kazakh SSR (now Kazakhstan).[1] He graduated from the Kazakh National Academy of Cinema as a film director.[2] In interviews, he has stated that he was himself raised according to the Kazakh tradition of bauryna salu — in which a child is sent to live with grandparents — an experience that later inspired his debut film.[3]
Career
From 2004 to 2019, Kuchinchirekov worked with Kazakh filmmaker Sergey Dvortsevoy.[2] During this period, he acted as Asa in Dvortsevoy's film Tulpan (2008).[4] The film won the Un Certain Regard prize at the 2008 Cannes Film Festival.[5] He later appeared in Dvortsevoy's Ayka (2018).[6] Kuchinchirekov directed and wrote the short film Gas Is Over (2013).[2]
Kuchinchirekov made his feature directorial debut with Bauryna Salu (2023), a semi-autobiographical drama shot in rural villages in the Almaty Region.[3] The film premiered in the New Directors competition at the 71st San Sebastián International Film Festival in September 2023.[7] In September 2024, it was selected as Kazakhstan's official submission for the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film.[8]
