Augusto Rivera Parga (25 June 1883 – 3 November 1949) was a Chilean naval officer, public administrator and politician of the Radical Party. He served as senator[1][2] of the Republic representing the Seventh Provincial Grouping and held several administrative posts in Chilean public service.[3]

Biography
He was born in San Fernando on 25 June 1883, the son of Domingo Rivera Cruzat and Dolores Parga Olmos de Aguilera. On 11 October 1906 he married Ana Parga Cuevas, and they had seven children.[3]
He studied at the San Fernando Lyceum and later entered the Naval School, from which he retired with the rank of second lieutenant.[3]
He worked as hydrographic engineer in the Directorate of Public Works between 1906 and 1910. Afterwards he was employed as an insurance liquidator in Concepción, Valparaíso and Santiago from 1910 until approximately 1936.[3]
Public career
Rivera was a founding member and vice-president of the University of Concepción and founder and president of the city’s School Colonies programme. In public administration he served as Intendant of Concepción between 1921 and 1924 and later as Intendant of Santiago from 24 December 1938 to 4 March 1940. He also acted as government commissioner during the negotiations for the purchase by the Chilean State of the railway from Lebu to Los Sauces and served as vice-president of the Corporación de Reconstrucción y Auxilio.[3]
Political career
Rivera was a member of the Radical Party. He served as director and president of the Radical Assembly of Concepción and later as national president of the party in 1929.[3]
He was elected senator for the 7th Provincial Grouping (Ñuble, Concepción and Bío-Bío) for the 1926–1934 period. During his senatorial tenure he served on the Standing Committees on Government, which he chaired, Labour and Social Welfare, and Public Works and Communications.[3]
The 1932 socialist coup d'état led to the dissolution of the National Congress on 6 June 1932.[3]
During his time as senator and as Intendant he promoted the allocation of funds from the Concepción Lottery to support the University of Concepción and secured public funding for the reconstruction of the city’s girls’ lyceum and other public buildings.[3]
Other activities
He served as director and president of the Sociedad de Instrucción Primaria of Concepción and of the Liga de Estudiantes Pobres. He was also director of the insurance company Lloyd de Chile.[3]
He worked as a contributor to the newspaper El Sur of Concepción and was a member of the Club de Concepción, the Club El Caleuche and the Rotary Club.[3]
He was decorated as Commander of the Order of the Crown of Italy and received the Palmes Académiques of France.[3]
