Aymium is a manufacturing company that produces biocarbon and biohydrogen products that replace traditional fuels in the production of metals and energy, growing crops and in the purification of water and air.[1] The company’s technology and processes are backed by more than 250 issued and pending patents, including many issued to company founder James Mennell.[2]

Aymium’s biocarbon products are produced using certified, sustainably sourced biomass, including forest and sawmill residues and agricultural harvest residues.[1] The company uses a combustion-free thermochemical process that separates biomass into biocarbon, biohydrogen and water. The process creates excess energy and water that can be recycled and reused.[1]
History
Aymium was originally founded in 2012 as Biogenic Reagents, for research and development, followed by a transition to National Carbon Technologies and then Aymium.[3] It is currently headquartered in Oakdale, Minnesota.
Leadership
Aymium was founded by James A. Mennell, who serves as CEO. He has more than 30 years of experience in the energy, bio-products and environmental sectors working for or advising global companies, including Cargill, Koch Industries, POET, 3M, Cleveland-Cliffs and General Electric. He holds more than 100 issued patents regarding bioproduct and process technologies.[2] Mennell graduated from the University of South Dakota and received his Juris Doctor and master’s degrees from Duke University.[4]
Locations
In 2026, Aymium had two locations: the headquarters office in Oakdale, Minnesota, and a biocarbon production facility in Marquette, Michigan. In 2026, the company was nearing completion of a new biocarbon production facility in Williams, California.[5]
Joint Ventures
Aymium is also part of several joint ventures building additional biocarbon production facilities. One, announced in 2022, is with Steel Dynamics. Known as SDI Biocarbon Solutions, the joint venture constructed a production facility in Columbus, Mississippi, to provide biocarbon for Steel Dynamics’ plants in Mississippi, Indiana and Texas.[1]
Another joint venture, called TerraForge Biocarbon Solutions between Aymium and forest products company Weyerhaeuser, was announced in 2025. It will lead to the construction of a $135 million manufacturing facility in Magnolia, Mississippi.[6] That joint venture is the first of several biocarbon plants planned by Aymium and Weyerhaeuser.[7]
Additionally, mining company Rio Tinto and Aymium formed a joint venture in 2024 called Évolys Québec Inc. The goal of the venture is to manufacture renewable metallurgical biocarbon products to reduce carbon emissions in large-scale industrial processes. Production takes place at a revitalized pulp and paper mill in Thurso, Quebec. Prior to that, Rio Tinto and Aymium had also formed a strategic partnership in 2022.[8]
In 2026, Aymim and the Japanese trading company Hanwa Co. Ltd signed a $500 million memorandum of understanding to develop a large-scale biocarbon production plant in the U.S.[9]
