  • Comment: Coverage must be from multiple reliable sources, all of these appear to be around a single event on 13 June 2026. Also coverage is more about Billy Woods would suggest merging, adding this to Billy Woods until more notability is met. Lacanic (talk) 20:10, 2 August 2026 (UTC)

History

Backwoodz Studioz was founded in 2002 by Billy Woods, who worked alongside communicator and Caroline Records intern Anton Schlesinger. Schlesinger started as a production assistant, and had connections to various other labels including Stone Throw Records and Definitive Jux, along with Nature Sounds while Backwoodz Studioz was forming.[1][2][3]

Backwoodz Studioz began to grow during the 2000s, becoming the label to other rappers as well as in-house producers. Woods released his debut album, Camouflage, through the label in 2003. The success of The Reavers—a New York collective which included Woods and Vordul Mega—along with the additions of members from the Monsta Island Czars group, expanded the label's roster.

By the beginning of the 2010s, Backwoodz Studioz had visibly shrunken in size, down to housing only Woods, new recruit but not full member Elucid, and hip-hop artist Willie Green. In 2012, after The Chalice was released in 2004, Woods decided to finish and release another solo album, being History Will Absolve Me. Woods envisioned the album would mark his departure from the music industry, as his label had become largely unprofitable.[4][5] History Will Absolve Me became more popular than Woods had anticipated, which ultimately revitalized his career and made him a cult classic in underground hip-hop.[5] Woods formed hip-hop duo Armand Hammer with Elucid in 2013, releasing their debut mixtape, Half Measures, and debut album, Race Music, the same year.

Backwoodz Studioz continued to grow after Woods' popularity boosted. Producer Blockhead, who produced Woods' 2013 album Dour Candy, joined the label in 2017. Schlesinger is the "President" of the label as of 2026,[2][3] while Woods runs A&R and executive produces for some artists on the label.[2][3][6]
