Parameswaran Balram Iyer (born 1 March 1961), often credited as P. Balram or simply Balram is an Indian playback singer primarily associated with Tamil and Malayalam film music.[2] He began his career by singing numerous jingles for advertisements and television serials in the early 1990s in various Indian languages; the first was for the State Bank of India in 1991.[3]

He made his film debut with the song "Nee Dhaan En Desiya Geetham", composed by A. R. Rahman, for the film Paarthale Paravasam in 2001. He has also lent his voice to Telugu, Hindi, and Marathi songs. His distinguished voice has caught the attention of leading composers such as A. R. Rahman, Yuvan Shankar Raja, Vidyasagar, and D. Imman.

Early life and education

Balram Iyer was born on March 1, 1961 in Mumbai, Maharashtra. His father R. Parameswaran was an employee at Philips. He completed his B.E. in Mechanical Engineering from Victoria Jubilee Technical Institute and later pursued postgraduate studies in Materials Management. He showed an early interest in music and began singing at a young age and received formal training in vocal music under the guidance of Guruvayur Melshanti Krishnan Nampoothiri. Until 1996, he balanced a corporate engineering career with music before fully committing to singing.

Career

Advertisements & Television series jingles

Balram began performing jingles in the early 1990s in five Indian languages; his first was for the State Bank of India in 1991. In 1992, he won the “Best Singer” award at Venus Records & Tapes' All-India Khiladi contest. Over time, he voiced hundreds of jingles across India, including brands like Maruti, Reynolds, Tata Tea, and Ford.

Playback singing

Balram's debut Tamil film song, "Neethane En Desiya Geetham," was recorded in 2001 for A. R. Rahman’s Paarthale Paravasam. He gained recognition for performances in Tamil hits like "Panikaatrey" (Run, 2002), "Oviya" (Kurumbu, 2003), "Dhavam Ondru" (ABCD, 2005), “Kaatrin Mozhi” (Mozhi, 2007), and “Innum Enna Thozha” (7aum Arivu, 2011). His Malayalam debut came with Gramaphone, where music director Vidyasagar compared his voice to that of renowned singer P. B. Sreenivas.

Some of his well known tracks are: Vellai Poove, Bahut Yaad Aate Ho Tum, Vaadum Ullame, Paikkurumbiye Meykkum, Paarijatha Malar, Enakkoru, Anbae Enn, Oh Hoo Hoo, Muthirai Mothiram, Bhumi Aalad Maanum Aalad, Azhagumillai, and much more. He has also sung the song for Aamir Khan's Satyamev Jayate, Jal Na Jaye Jal, and Matti Bole. He has given his voice to songs like Marmamaai, Alias Janki (2013), a Telugu song. He has also sung Usuru (2011), a Telugu song.
