Bennett Allard Haggen (1905-1980) was a pioneering figure in the American grocery retail industry, best known as the co-founder of Haggen Inc., a regional supermarket chain based in Bellingham, Washington.

Biography

Haggen was born on August 2, 1905 to Lars Lewis Haggen and Ida Siverina Hovland.[1] When he was born, his father and mother were 40 and 30 years old, respectively. He married Dorothy Frances Clark on July 11, 1927 and the couple had two children, Donald and Rick Haggen.[1][2]

Haggen entered the grocery business during the Great Depression, a period marked by economic hardship and limited consumer resources. In 1933, alongside his wife Dorothy Haggen and brother-in-law Doug Clark, Bennett launched the Economy Food Store using $1,100 in pooled savings.[3][4] The store was located at 1314 Bay Street in downtown Bellingham and catered to the local community’s need for affordable groceries during a time of national crisis. The store is noted for introducing the first self-service meat counter in 1941.[5]
