The band underwent numerous lineup changes, with vocalist and keyboard player Andrew Lindsay as the constant member throughout the band's history.

History

As a singer, keyboard player and guitarist, Lindsay was a part of the burgeoning independent music scene in 1990s British Columbia's Okanagan Valley. While in Oliver, B.C., Lindsay and Allan Kirby co-founded industrial band Jesus Gets Drafted. The band had three releases, 'Conscription'(1991), 'Decomposition'(1993) and 'Bucket'(1995) Concurrently Lindsay moved to Vancouver in 1991.

During his time in Vancouver, Lindsay joined Vancouver pop band The Hill, formed by Dale "Alyas S. Macintosh" Dumoret. The band drew from styles including pop, industrial, rock, hip-hop, lounge, trip-hop, industrial and metal. The Hill had one major release, 1999's 'Sin City Cabaret' recorded with Paul Silvera (Armoury Studios), and appeared on a 1997 Deprogrammed Records compilation 'Education In Infestation'.

Also while in Vancouver, Lindsay founded Biffy Perdu in 1999, in which he pretended to be an aging blues guitartist/taxidermist whose hand had been wounded in a mid-seventies bar brawl. Lindsay was described as such[1] in the media coverage which the band garnered[2]. As a band, Biffy Perdu drew from a broad range of influences, including the Pixies, Tom Waits, industrial music and a stripped down southern rock aesthetic. According to CITR-FM's Discorder, to Biffy Perdu "life is really just about bourbon, pork rinds, and pickup trucks."[3]

Biffy Perdu's first album, 'The Untold Power of the Cosmos' was recorded in 1999 at Bedlam Studio in Richmond, BC, and by Shawn Thingvold at Mushroom Studios in Vancouver, BC. The band toured North-America three times in support of the album, and garnered sustained media interest[4].

In 2003, Biffy Perdu released the 'Stapled-Down Lust' ep, which was recorded in Montreal by Lindsay and Shane Watt.

In summer of 2004, Biffy Perdu played its last North-American tour alongside Montreal rockabilly artist Bloodshot Bill, the last date of which was in Wichita, Kansas. The band's last public performance was later that year, as part of a show at seminal Montreal punk venue Café Chaos[5].

In 2005, Lindsay recorded the 'Hail Augustus' ep, released posthumously in summer of 2006.

A number of musicians took part in Biffy Perdu over the years, some of whom also adopted aliases as part of their involvement in the band. Participants in Biffy Perdu included Eric Y. Lapointe, Frank Bonneville, Shane Watt, Amelia "Deathmaster Sassy" Hanna, Mars Aladas, Jay Travers, William Moysey, Steve "Captain Mark Stevens" Grainger, Shiraz Mohammed, John Ancheta, Ben Nevis, Matt "Salvadore Papricash" Stevenson, Remo Grainger, Declan "Dexter Manly" Lane, and David J. Taylor.

Many of the musicians involved with Biffy Perdu continued to be active in other arts and musical projects. Notably, Lapointe joined Montreal band Nightwood and played drums on their 2008 'Big City' ep. Watt continues to be active as a solo musician, producer and visual artist, playing bass with Krista Muir and the High Dials. Bonneville was a photographer and poet, and played with death metal band Eulogy. Aladas played drums with Pushing Up Daisies and later founded Montreal-based Marsonic Studios. Ancheta was a member of the band Yamantaka_//_Sonic_Titan (2011-2015) and is an active visual artist. Moysey works as a sound technician with the Roundhouse Community Arts & Recreation Centre and was a 2018 Candidate for mayor of Gibsons, BC. Taylor is an award-winning producer and sound engineer[6] and was the foley artist on the Corner Gas TV program. In 2003, Mohammed became the drummer for I Mother Earth vocalist Edwin's backup band. In 2008 Lindsay co-founded the Montreal hackerspace Foulab. Lindsay and Watt collaborate as part of rock duo Swall, whose 2016 album 'A Swall Kinda Thing' was released on Totally Real Probably Not Fake Records.
