Etymology

According to local tradition, the island was originally known as Manwoldo ("Full Moon Island"). During the reign of King Injo of Joseon, the military commander Im Gyeong-eop is said to have sheltered on the island during a storm and, after seeing a full moon rise over the sea, gave it the name Manwoldo. Over time, the name evolved into Boreumdo, with boreum (보름) meaning "full moon" in Korean. [1]
