From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Brotherhood Welfare Development Organization (BWDO), commonly known as Brotherhood, is a Bangladesh-based non-profit voluntary organization headquartered in Savar Upazila, Dhaka. Founded on 14 April 2016 by a group of school students, the organization operates on a model where members fund social welfare projects using their personal savings.[1]

History

The organization, known as Brotherhood, began its journey on 14 April 2016 in the Ashulia region near Savar. It was initially established through the initiative of 135 school-going teenagers with the aim of engaging youth in social service activities.[1] Since its inception, the organization has expanded its operations significantly. On 16 December 2019, it formally inaugurated the "Brotherhood Orphan Fund" to provide educational support to underprivileged children.[1]

Key Projects and Initiatives

The organization has been active in disaster response, including providing food and financial aid to families affected by floods in Satkhira in 2021.[1] It also operates "Walls of Humanity" (Bhalobashar Deyal) near Jahangirnagar University and Savar, where donated clothing and essentials are made available to those in need.

Education and Restoration

In February 2024, BWDO members undertook a restoration project at Jahangirnagar University, clearing long-accumulated debris from a neglected swimming pool area to reclaim the site for community use.[2] The organization also runs a mobile library system to promote literacy among students.

Documentary and Advocacy

In May 2025, BWDO produced a documentary titled Beyond the Sunlight, portraying the struggles and aspirations of students with special needs at Jahangirnagar University. The premiere was held at the Zahir Raihan Auditorium, with Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Mohammad Kamrul Ahsan as the chief guest and Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Academic) Dr. Md. Mahfuzur Rahman as a special guest.[3]

Empowerment and Healthcare

Under its "Swabolombi Project," BWDO provides livelihood materials such as poultry and vegetable vans to low-income families to help them achieve financial independence.[4] Additionally, it maintains the "Brotherhood Blood Bank," a voluntary network connecting blood donors with patients in Savar, Ashulia, and Dhamrai Upazila.[1]
