CDC Company
CDC Company (also known as CDC Chain Drive Crane) is an Italian engineering and ropeway systems company founded in 2014 in Bolzano, Italy. The company specialises in the design, construction, installation and maintenance of aerial ropeway systems for both passenger and freight transportation, and develops innovative aerial transportation technologies, including the patented Air Bridge system.[1] CDC operates internationally and collaborates with engineering and design partners in the ropeway and infrastructure industry.
History
CDC Company was established in 2014 by Helmut Gurndin and Alexander Philippov in Bolzano, Italy. Both founders had previously accumulated over two decades of experience in ropeway systems and high‑altitude construction work.[2]
Between 2015 and 2018, the company focused on early ropeway projects in Europe, expanding its technical capabilities and workforce. In 2019, CDC introduced its proprietary Air Bridge technology, a self‑propelled aerial module designed to improve efficiency and adaptability in ropeway installations.[3]
By 2020–2023, CDC had expanded its operations into multiple international markets and participated in larger infrastructure projects, serving regions including Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. Its multidisciplinary approach integrates engineering, surveying, architecture, urban planning and construction management.
Technology and Innovation
CDC's most notable technological contribution to ropeway engineering is the Air Bridge system, a self‑propelled mechanism developed and patented by the company. The Air Bridge module incorporates numerous technical innovations and is designed to reduce operating costs, lower energy consumption, and allow for flexible installations in remote or challenging terrains, including long‑span crossings and steep environments.[4]
The Air Bridge system is manufactured in South Tyrol, Italy, and complies with European Union safety regulations for ropeways. It has been promoted as a cost‑effective alternative to traditional aerial ropeways, bridges and ferry systems in both passenger and material transport applications.
Products and services
CDC Company offers a range of products and services related to ropeway systems:
- Design and engineering of aerial ropeway systems
- Construction and installation of passenger and material ropeways
- Technical maintenance, system upgrades and service contracts
- Development of custom technology solutions for challenging environments, including patented systems like Air Bridge[5]
The company also provides multidisciplinary project support, including high‑altitude operations, helicopter logistics, geotechnical anchoring, and slope stabilisation services in support of ropeway infrastructure.
Projects
CDC’s project portfolio includes passenger ropeways in mountainous and tourist regions, as well as cargo and combined ropeway installations for resorts and industrial applications. The company often works in partnership with engineering firms and industry networks such as the Ropeway Project Group to deliver complex installations.[6]
Partnerships and affiliations
CDC Company collaborates with a network of international engineering and design firms specialising in aerial transportation systems. Partners and affiliated organisations include design and planning bureaus, engineering specialists, and industry groups such as the Ropeway Project Group.[7]
Recognition
CDC has participated in international exhibitions and forums focused on ropeway and transport technologies, showcasing its products and innovations at industry events such as Interalpin and UITP forums.[8]
