History
Carmel Bakery was founded in 1899 by Ernest Schweninger, an early resident of Carmel-by-the-Sea. Schweninger lived in an apartment above the bakery, reflecting the mixed residential and commercial use common in the town’s early development.[1]
According to archival coverage from the Carmel Pine Cone, the bakery closed in 1917 when its original owners shifted their focus to a nearby grocery business.[2] The bakery reopened in 1920 under new management, with Carl Husemann leasing the building.[3]
Over the course of its history, the bakery has changed ownership several times. In 1986, it was acquired by the Pepe family, local restaurateurs who operate multiple establishments in Carmel-by-the-Sea.[4]
