Cascade Shops is a shopping mall in the small city of Banff, Alberta. Of the city's 4 shopping malls, it is the largest having 126,999 square feet (11,798.6 m2) of gross leasable area.[1] The mall is located on the Banff Avenue Retail Corridor, with two malls directly across the street from it: Sundance Mall and Bear Street Mall.

Unlike other malls, Cascade Shops is a mixed-use property consisting of retail, office space and rental apartments. The mall consists of 81,328 sq ft (7,555.6 m2) retail floor space, 26,804 sq ft (2,490.2 m2) of office space, 18,867 sq ft (1,752.8 m2) of residential apartments, and also contains a parkade of 250 parking spaces.
Unlike most malls, Cascade Shops does not contain any anchor tenants, instead the mall relies on traffic coming in from stores on the sides of Banff Avenue and Wolf Street. The largest of these retailers, which the mall advertises on it's website, are: The Old Spaghetti Factory, Ardene, GAP, Liquor Depot, I.D.A. Drug Mart and Canada Goose.
History
The mall was originally built by Banff resident Sam Schultz in 1990 under the name of Cascade Plaza Mall.
In 2005, the mall was bought out by the RBC Capital Markets Real Estate Group and would enjoy moderate success, but in 2018 the group looked for a new owner of the property. Under their ownership, the mall would be renamed to Cascade Plaza Shops, and eventually shortened down to just "Cascade Shops".
In November 2018, the mall was bought by Atlas Development. The group planned to renovate the structure to include better lighting and new security cameras. Atlas worked with architects Abugov Kasper and Rob Findlay to redesign the mall to add a 4th floor of 26,804 square feet of office space above all the retail. Plans were laid out with the purchase to reconfigure the food court into a "trendy food hall", and to potentially add a dramatic climbing wall that would go all the way up to a glass cupola atop the building.
In August 2020, Atlas Development would apply for a development permit to redevelop sections of the property into a hotel.[2] In January 2023, the Basecamp Resorts company would open a new hotel attached to the mall. The Basecamp Resorts Banff would feature 21 apartment-style suites with one to three bedrooms each.[3]
Tourism
The mall is the largest mall inside of Banff, Alberta, which exists as a tourism hub of Canada with approximately 4,120,000 million tourists during the 2019-20 tourism season.

On December 3, 2008, a Banff tourism channel released an advertisement for the mall by the title of "Cascade Plaza Banff's Shopping Mall", which grossed upwards of 8,000 views.
On May 5, 2010, the official tourism website for the Banff National Park released an article titled "Shopping Malls of Banff", in which it made the claim that the mall was "by far the biggest mall in Banff" and that the food court was comparable to ones of the likes of large shopping malls.
Transit Connections
The mall is located next to the Elk Street Transit Hub stop, which is served by bus routes 1 and 2 of the Roam Transit Service.
