Chris P. Bacon (13 January 2013 – February 2021) was a male pot-bellied pig from Florida who gained internet fame from the use of a custom wheelchair.[1][2] Born with a congenital defect that paralyzed his hind legs, the piglet became a viral sensation, eventually becoming the subject of several children's books.[3][4][5]

Early life and adoption
Chris P. Bacon was born on the 13th January 2013 with fused joints in his hind legs, a condition that prevented him from walking. When he was ten days old he was brought to the animal clinic of Dr. Len Lucero in Sumterville, Florida by an owner who expected the animal would be euthanized.[6][7] Lucero instead decided to adopt the animal and brought him to his farm.[8]
Wheelchair and viral fame
To assist with the piglet's mobility Lucero constructed a mobility device using parts from a K'NEX toy set.[9] A video of the piglet learning to use the harness was uploaded to YouTube in January 2013 that received over 474,000 views within weeks.[10][11]
As the pig grew he transitioned from the toy-based harness to a professional canine wheelchair donated by the organisation Walkin' Pets. He appeared on national television programs, including the Today show and Anderson Live with Anderson Cooper.[12] He was also taken to several charity events and fundraisers.
He gained further fame after a segment on WPSD Local 6 went viral. In the segment Robert Bradfield suffered an on-air laughing fit while attempting to report on the pig's name.[13]
Death
In February 2021 Chris P. Bacon was residing at Purpose Farm, a non-profit youth farm in Baldwinsville, New York. A barn fire at the facility resulted in the death of over 20 animals and while Chris P. Bacon initially survived the blaze, he died shortly thereafter due to severe smoke inhalation and lung damage.[14][15]
