Columbia Credit Union was started in 1952, by Delbert Thompson as the SP&S Federal Credit Union to serve employees of the Spokane, Portland and Seattle Railway.[1][2] In 1975, the charter was changed to serve customers outside the railroad industry.[1][2]

In 1992, Columbia merged with the State and Federal Employees Credit Union (S.A.F.E.).[3]

After operating solely in Clark County, Washington for 65 years, Columbia Credit Union opened its first Portland, Oregon branch in 2017 in the Southeast Buckman neighborhood.[4]

Following the opening of the Portland branch, Columbia Credit Union received a Sustainability at Work Silver Certification for 2018-2021 from the City of Portland’s Bureau of Planning and Sustainability.[4]

As of 2018, the credit union had 13 branches, 12 in Clark County, Washington and one in Portland.[4]
