Cornwall Shivan Temple
The Cornwall Shivan Temple is a Tamil Hindu-based temple located at 1730 Vincent Massey Drive, Cornwall, Ontario, Canada. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, it is the first and only Hindu temple in Cornwall.
History and Establishment
Founded by Mr. Sivarupan Shanmugalingam, the Cornwall Sivan Temple’s journey began with the installation of a Shiva Lingam on September 21, 2015. The temple faced various challenges, including regulatory obstacles that led to multiple phases of deconstruction and reconstruction. Despite these setbacks, the temple was successfully opened in 2023.
Community and Services
Operating as a non-profit organization, the Cornwall Sivan Temple serves as a spiritual and cultural center for Cornwall’s Tamil and Hindu communities. The temple is not governed by Religious Rights authorities, allowing it to function independently to meet the needs of devotees.
Festivals and Events
The temple celebrates key Hindu festivals such as Maha Shivaratri, Navaratri, Diwali, and Thai Pongal. A highlight is the 12-day annual festival for Lord Shiva, held between July and August, which attracts devotees for its special rituals and gatherings. Every Friday includes a dedicated pooja and abhishekam, and all morning and evening poojas are followed by free freshly made meals to promote a sense of community.
The temple’s beautifully crafted statues of Hindu deities are at the heart of its spiritual experience. Each statue, created with exceptional detail and devotion, radiates a sacred presence that inspires peace and reverence among visitors.
