History
Cyprus Comic Con was established in 2014. Contemporary coverage described it as the first comic con held in Cyprus, with its inaugural event taking place on 13 September 2014 at the European University Cyprus in Nicosia.[3][4]
A 2014 report in the Cyprus Mail identified some of the organisers including Peter Anders Hvass and Christos Ellinas.[5] Early reporting described the event as inspired by larger international comic conventions and intended to create a local gathering place for comics, film, television, animation and related fandoms in Cyprus.[6][7]
By 2019, the Cyprus Mail described the event as "the largest celebration of pop culture on the island".[8] By the 2020s, the convention was being held at the Cyprus State Fairgrounds in Nicosia which is operated by the Cyprus State Fairs Authority.[9]
Growth and significance
In a 2025 feature on the convention's role in Cypriot culture, Politis described Cyprus Comic Con as "the island's largest pop culture festival". The same article stated that the 2024 edition drew more than 30,000 visitors, including attendees travelling to Cyprus from abroad for the event.[10]
Politis further argued that the convention had contributed to broader acceptance in Cyprus of cosplay, gaming, fantasy and related fan cultures, presenting it as a space for creative expression and community-building.[11]
Programme
Cyprus Comic Con includes activities associated with international comic and pop-culture conventions, including cosplay competitions, guest appearances, artist and vendor areas, gaming activities, workshops, panels and themed zones.[12]
The convention has featured guests from comics, cosplay, film, television and music. Coverage in the Cyprus Mail and other outlets documented appearances connected with the 2024 and 2025 editions, including Kamui Cosplay, Gehe, actor Paul Anderson, and singer Jason Paige.[13][14][15][16]
