Daniel Schilling Weiss Nguyen[1] [2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13][14][15][16][17][18][19][20](Tiến Sĩ Giáo Sư Nguyễn Cao Minh).[21][22](Vietnamese: Nguyễn Linh) is an American information technology leader, academic, and former United States Marine. He has held various technical roles in the defense and technology industries and serves as a faculty member at several higher education institutions.

Early life and education

Nguyen[23] was born in Hue, Vietnam. His father, Nguyễn Do, served in the South Vietnamese military. Following the fall of Saigon, Nguyen's family left Vietnam; he arrived in the United States in 1983 and was subsequently adopted by Raymond Leon and Lucille Marie Schilling.

Nguyen attended the Illinois Institute of Technology[24], where he competed in cross-country on an athletic scholarship and earned a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering in 1993. He later completed a Master of Science in Computer Science from Northeastern Illinois University (2004)[25] and a PhD in management with a focus on Information Systems Management from Walden University (2013)[26].

Military service

Nguyen served on active duty in the United States Marine Corps from 1994 to 1998[27] . He was a member of the Marine Tactical Electronic Warfare Squadron 3 (VMAQ-3)[28], stationed at Iwakuni, Japan[29], and Aviano, Italy[30]. During this period, he participated in Operation Silver Wake[31], a 1997 non-combatant evacuation operation in Albania.

For his service, he received several military decorations, including the NATO Meritorious Service Medal and the Armed Forces Service Medal.

Career

Technology and Government

Following his military service (United States Marine Corps), Nguyen[32] worked in software engineering and systems administration. His private sector experience includes roles at Motorola (1997–2003)[33], Foxconn (2007–2008), CINRAM (2008-2008), EF Johnson Technology (2008–2009), Northrop Grumman (2009–2010), TASC, Inc., (2010–2011), and ManTech International (2011–2013)[34]

In the public sector, Nguyen[35] served as a Lead IT Cybersecurity Specialist at the Defense Finance and Accounting Service (DFAS) from 2013 to 2024. In 2024, he joined the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) [36]as a Supervisory IT Specialist.

Academia

Nguyen[37] has held faculty appointments at multiple institutions, primarily focusing on dissertation mentorship and information systems. He has served in various capacities at the University of Maryland Global Campus[38][39], Purdue Global University, Aspen University[40][41], Indiana Wesleyan University, Colorado Technical University[42][43], Colorado State University Global, Saudi Electronic University, and Ivy Tech Community College. His research interests include global virtual teams[44], agile software development[45], cybersecurity, data science and artificial intelligence (AI).
