Distalmotion is a Swiss medical device company headquartered at the Biopôle life sciences campus in Lausanne. The company produces a soft tissue robot assisted surgical system, DEXTER, which is for minimally invasive surgical procedures.

DEXTER Robotic Surgery System
The DEXTER Robotic Surgery System is a mobile robotic, soft-tissue, surgical platform. According to MedTech Dive, the DEXTER system is designed to be used in existing operating rooms without requiring dedicated infrastructure.[1]
The DEXTER system consists of two modular robotic arms, a camera arm, and an open surgeon console. During a procedure, the entire system is draped keeping surgeons in the sterile field. This configuration allows the surgeon to operate the robot while remaining scrubbed to access the patient bedside when needed.
DEXTER can be used with standard laparoscopic instruments and operating room equipment. The system allows surgeons to switch between robotic-assisted and conventional laparoscopic techniques during a procedure.
The instrument portfolio consists of monopolar and bipolar single‐use instruments including Needle Holder, Johann Grasper, Maryland Dissector, Scissors, and Hook. The system provides seven degrees of freedom and a wristed angulation of 75°.
DEXTER is commercially available in Europe and the United States.
Clinical Use
In December 2020, Distalmotion received CE Mark approval for the DEXTER surgical robot for minimally invasive procedures in general surgery, gynecology, and urology.[2]
In October 2024, Distalmotion received De Novo marketing authorization from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for use of DEXTER in adult inguinal hernia repair. Subsequent FDA authorizations in 2025 expanded approved indications to include adult cholecystectomy and benign hysterectomy.[3]
Clinical studies have also evaluated the use of DEXTER in ventral hernia repair and uterine fibroid removal, and a clinical trial for pelvic organ prolapse has been completed.[4]
Funding
Distalmotion is a privately held company and has raised multiple rounds of private financing to support product development and commercial expansion.
In January 2026, Distalmotion announced an investment from Johnson & Johnson through its corporate venture capital organization, Johnson & Johnson Innovation.[5]
In November 2025, Distalmotion completed a USD 150 million Series G financing round related to commercial expansion of DEXTER in the United States.[6]
In April 2023, Distalmotion closed a USD 150 million Series F financing round led by Revival Healthcare Capital.[7]
In January 2022, Distalmotion closed a Series E financing round totaling USD 90 million.[8]
