Overview
Dolores Zinny and Juan Maidagan (Zinny Maidagan) are a Berlin based collaborative duo of visual artists. Their work consists mainly on large scale installations, sculptures in dialogue with the surrounding architectural or urban spaces and public art works. They started working together at the beginning of the 90‘.[1]
Life, Career and Education
In 1994, Dolores Zinny and Juan Maidagan moved to New York City. During 1995-1996 they were fellows of the Whitney Museum ISP, in New York City where they lived until 2002. They moved to Berlin in 2002 on a DAAD Artist in Berlin Residency Award, where they still live and work.[2][3]
Parallel to their collaborative work, they present work individually, as for example, Dolores Zinny Vientos Alisios, a series of drawings and painted fabrics for the Kreeger Museum 2024, Washington DC, reviewed by the Washington Post.[4] Her drawings were exhibited at Carlier Gebauer Berlin, CPM Gallery Baltimore and Herlizka Faria Buenos Aires- New York. Her drawings are in the collection of LACMA.
Juan Maidagan was born in Rosario, Argentina in 1957 and studied Medicine at the University Nacional of Rosario, from 1976 until 1982, but quit before finishing a degree. During the 90’ he studied theater in Buenos Aires, and participated in group projects focusing on biodiversity. He served as visiting artist at a wide range of art universities. Juan Maidagan taught in the Master of Fine Arts at Umea University, Sweden from 2002 until 2006.[1]
Museum Exhibitions and Biennials Commissions
In 2009- 2010, the MMK Museum für Moderne Kunst Frankfurt MMK ZOLLAMT hosted a show by Dolores Zinny and Juan Maidagan entitled Compartment/ Das Abteil. It was the couple’s first museum exhibition in Germany, for which they specially devised a group of sculptures, collages and models.[5] The group not only consistently advanced one of the key thrusts of their work, but at the same time are strongly site-specific.
