Down the Long River was first announced in 2024, when Matt Cardona was cast in a leading role.[4] The project marks the feature directorial debut of Harry Kolmer and was written by Kurt Aubuchon.
Subsequent casting additions included Felissa Rose and Jackie Kelly as the ensemble expanded during production development.[5]
Filming took place in Missouri, with regional coverage noting the production as part of ongoing independent film activity in the state.[6]
In an interview on the Indie Film Sucks podcast, writer Kurt Aubuchon described the film as a “deconstruction Western set in the post-Civil War Reconstruction era,” while director Harry Kolmer cited influences including The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford and the films of Michael Mann, particularly Thief (film).[7]
