Academic Career
Miles completed a PhD in nano-optics from the University of Bristol in 2016, with a thesis titled “Interferometric cross-polarization microscopy : towards the detection of nanoparticles in biological material”.[1]
His research on Correlative Light Electron Microscopy was published in Nature Scientific Reports. [2]. His work on Cross-Polarization Microscopy[3] and Optical Characterisation of Nanodiamonds [4] were both published in ACS Publications.

Business Ventures
Miles is active in the UK deep tech ecosystem as a founder, investor, and advisor.[7] His work has focused on bridging the gap between academic research and commercial ventures, through the founding of Spin Up Science in 2018 and Empirical Ventures in 2023. [8][9]
Spin Up Science
In 2018 Miles founded Spin Up Science[8], focused on delivering entrepreneurial programs to researchers to support innovation ecosystems in science and technology.[10]
The Spin Up Science Innovation Ecosystems programme was shortlisted for the Falling Walls Science Breakthrough of the Year 2021 award.[11]
Empirical Ventures
Miles cofounded Empirical Ventures in 2023[9] to invest into early-stage deep tech ventures. [12] The portfolio spans life sciences, advanced materials and robotics,[13] including OSSTEC, who raised £2.5M in 2025 to 3D print partial knee implants[14], Xgenera developing a multi-cancer early detection (MCED) test, awarded £2.5M funding from the NIHR [15] and MintNeuro, who raised £1M in 2024 for minimally invasive neural implants. [16]
Fund I, launched in 2024,[17] raised £8.25M, with £5M from the British Business Investments Regional Angels Programme and £3.25M from other investors. [18]
In March 2026, Empirical Ventures secured a further £10M commitment from British Business Bank to invest into companies built by Venture Scientists.[19][20]
Advisory Roles
Miles has served as a non-executive director and advisor to several early-stage companies including BoobyBiome (since Apr 2025)[21], a female-founded company transforming infant health that raised a £2.5M seed round in 2025,[22] Ensilicated Technologies (July 2022 - Aug 2025)[23], who are transporting vaccines without the cold chain that raised a £4.5M seed round in 2025,[24] and Transdermal Diagnostics (since Mar 2022)[25], working on a needle-free continuous glucose monitor that raised £1.1M in 2022. Miles has been vocal about science entrepreneurship.[27] [7] When interviewed by The Times, he has shared views on the importance of improving public understanding of scientific research and the societal implications of emerging technologies. [28] [29]
