Dundalk is located almost halfway along the Dublin to Belfast mainline, which proved to be an ideal location for the Great Northern Railway (GNR) to locate its railway works. The GNR Works was responsible for GNR's extensive fleet of both road and rail vehicles, carriages, buses, locomotives, and wagons [1]. GNR's main works was established in Dundalk in the late 1890s.[2]
Decline
By the 50's GNR was in great financial decline. Its new express passenger service "Enterprise", was not profitable. By 1952 the company had a £1,900,000 deficit. In 1958 the GNR was dissolved and its assets were divided between the two state railway companies, Coras Iompar Eireann and Ulster Transport Authority.[3] Despite a large protest of over one thousand GNR workers in 1957, Dundalk Railway works closed in 1958.[4]
