History

ECDB was founded in 2022 as an independent entity originating from Statista.[1] [2] [3] The aim was to offer a transaction-based perspective on the global e-commerce market at a time when consistent and comparable data were not readily accessible. [4]

Products and Services

Corporate Subscription

Subscribers have access to ECDB’s data via a web-based client portal. With statistics sourced from the database, analysts, forecasters and researchers publish industry reports, market forecasts, comparative estimates, charts, transaction KPI evaluations, economic metrics, and consumer statistics.[5] The company analyzes over 1 billion e-commerce transactions every month across various countries, which represents up to 2 percent of all worldwide online purchases. This serves to provide an immediate view of how global e-commerce is developing across metrics. [6]

The site publishes freely accessible insights that are based on ECDB proprietary data and discuss developments in e-commerce.[7]

Publications

ECDB regularly publishes reports, studies, and whitepapers. In cooperation with the EHI Retail Institute, ECDB releases the annual report “E-Commerce-Markt Deutschland”.[8][9][10] Since its first publication in 2009, the study has become one of the most frequently cited sources for e-commerce statistics in Germany.

The study determines annual market revenues in German e-commerce from a supply-side perspective by examining the top 1,000 online shops, as well as the Top 10 marketplaces by gross merchandise volume (GMV). Services, usage rights (e.g. mobile contracts), and platforms selling only digital goods (e.g. Google Play) are excluded.
