Charlie Kirk was born on October 14, 1993, in Arlington Heights, Illinois, and grew up in the Chicago suburb of Prospect Heights.^[4] His father worked as an architect, while his mother later became a mental health counselor.^[5][6] He was raised in a politically conservative household, though he has described his parents as relatively moderate Republicans.^{[citation needed]}

From a young age, Kirk had an interest in politics and conservative commentary.^[7] During his teenage years, he became influenced by people such as economist Milton Friedman and radio host Rush Limbaugh.^[8] While attending Wheeling High School, he became involved in Republican politics and volunteered for the 2010 Senate campaign of Mark Kirk, an Illinois Republican senator who was not related to him.^[9]

Kirk first gained wider attention as a high school student after writing an article criticizing what he believed was political bias in school textbooks.^[10] The piece was published by Breitbart News^[11] and led to an appearance on Fox Business, helping introduce him to a national conservative audience while he was still a teenager.^[12][13]

After graduating from high school, Kirk briefly attended Harper College in Illinois but left after one semester to pursue political activism full-time.^[14][15] In 2012, at the age of 18, he co-founded Turning Point USA, a conservative student organization that would later grow into one of the largest youth-focused political groups in the United States.^[16][17]
