The Eclipse Software Defined Vehicle Working Group (Eclipse SDV) is an industry collaboration of the Eclipse Foundation that develops and promotes open source software for software-defined vehicles (SDVs). Established in 2022, the working group brings together automotive manufacturers, suppliers, semiconductor companies, software vendors, and research organizations to develop shared software components, development tools, and full stack implementations intended for automotive applications.

History
The Eclipse Foundation announced the Eclipse Software Defined Vehicle (SDV) Working Group in 2022[2] in response to growing industry interest in software-defined vehicles and the increasing role of software in vehicle development. The initiative was created to provide a collaborative environment in which automotive manufacturers, suppliers, and technology companies could jointly develop open source software for non-differentiating components and infrastructure.
Since its formation, the working group has expanded through the addition of member organizations and projects focused on automotive software development. Its activities have included the incubation and development of new open source technologies[3], special interest groups, interoperability and integration between technologies, hackathons[4] and collaborations with other automotive software initiatives[5].
Activities
Eclipse SDV follows a "code first" development model, emphasizing the implementation of open source software a priori specifications. The working group's projects focus on reusable software components that can be shared across the automotive industry while allowing manufacturers to develop proprietary vehicle features independently[6][7].

Governance
Eclipse SDV is an industry collaboration under the Eclipse Foundation Foundation's open governance model and the Eclipse SDV Charter. Strategic and operational oversight is provided by a Steering Committee composed of representatives from member organizations. Technical direction is developed through project communities and technical advisory bodies in accordance with Eclipse Foundation development processes. Participation is open to organizations and individual contributors under the Eclipse Foundation's working group participation model.
Industry Collaborations
The working group includes participation from automotive manufacturers, Tier 1 suppliers, semiconductor companies, software vendors, hyperscalers, digital platform companies[12], and research institutions. Eclipse SDV collaborates with other organizations involved in automotive software development and participates in industry conferences, technical workshops, and interoperability events. Eclipse SDV is a partner in multiple automotive EU funded projects including FEDERATE and HAL4SDV, and participated in the European Connected and Autonomous Vehicle Alliance (ECAVA).
The working group has promoted the use of open source software as a means of developing shared automotive infrastructure while allowing participating organizations to build proprietary products and services on top of common software components[13]
