Emilio Eftychis is a South African architect of Greek descent and the founder of Eftychis Architects, a design practice established in Johannesburg in 2007. [1] His work is associated with minimalist design, raw material expression, and environmentally sustainable architecture- as was explored and discussed the SABC Top Billing broadcast.

Early life and background

Eftychis was born in South Africa to a Greek–South African family with a background in architecture. [1] His father, Eftychios Eftychis, is an architect and artist known for documenting heritage buildings in Pretoria through a series of architectural illustrations published in `My Pretoria: An Architectural and Cultural Odyssey`(ISBN: 987-0-9947240-8-3)"My Pretoria: An Architectural and Cultural Odyssey". Yesterday & Today. University of Pretoria. Retrieved 28 February 2026.</ref>reviewed in Scielo [2] This influence contributed to his early interest in architecture. [1]

Education and early influences

Eftychis matriculated at Pretoria Boys High School winning the South African Hellenic Educational and Technical Institute, SAHETI, student of the year award. Eftychis studied architecture at the University of Pretoria, completing a Bachelor of Architecture (BArch) degree in 2001. As a student, he and classmate Beyers Slabbert won a national award in the Murray & Roberts–Des Baker Architecture Student’s Competition.[3] After graduating, he worked for several architectural firms in South Africa and Europe, gaining experience in modern and context driven design approaches.[1]

Professional career

Eftychis Architects

In 2007, Eftychis founded Eftychis Architects, an interdisciplinary practice working across architecture, interiors, furniture, and sculpture. [4] The firm operates from Johannesburg and Cape Town.Eftychis was interviewed the SABC`s programme Top Billing (TV programme), where he discussed his work and design approach. [5] In 2019, Greek Reporter published a profile discussing his background and professional activities. .[1]

Architectural philosophy and style

Eftychis’s work is associated with minimalist design, characterised by clean lines, open spatial arrangements, and the use of essential forms. He frequently adapts vernacular structures for contemporary use.[6] His projects often employ raw materials such as concrete and steel in unadorned forms. Sustainability is a recurring aspect of his work, including passive design strategies and environmentally conscious material use.[1] One of his projects was included in 150 Best Sustainable House Ideas (2014), published by Harper Design.[7] reviewed by The Wall Street Journal [8]

Notable projects

Lotheringen House

In Lotheringen House, also known as the Lotheringen Modern Barn, Eftychis " reinvented the vernacular barn typology through a tasteful deconstruction and reinterpretation of the function of its parts" [9] a concrete residence located on a farm in Irene, Pretoria. The project reinterprets the barn typology through a courtyard centred layout and porous concrete frames that allow natural light and ventilation.

Heliotrope Home

The Heliotrope Home is a four bedroom residence completed in 2018 on an eco estate in Irene, Gauteng. [10] It incorporates open plan living spaces, exposed concrete and brick finishes, and systems aligned with the estate’s environmental guidelines. The project was nominated for ArchDailyBOTY ’s Building of the Year in 2019. [11]
