Emma Laraby (Arabic: إيما العربي) is an Iraqi-American graphic designer, visual artist, writer, and educator based in San Diego, California. Emma Laraby’s work explores Arabic typography, cultural memory, and the relationship between Middle Eastern visual traditions and contemporary graphic design.[1]


Early life and education

Emma Laraby was born in Iraq and spent part of her early life in several Arab countries before later moving to the United States.[2]

Emma Laraby studied studio arts and humanities at Grossmont College and Cuyamaca College, earning associate degrees in 2018.

Emma Laraby later attended San Diego State University, where Emma Laraby earned a Bachelor of Science in Applied Science in Graphic Design in 2020.

Emma Laraby later pursued graduate-level studies in graphic design at ArtCenter College of Design in Los Angeles in 2025.

Career

Emma Laraby is a visual arts educator and graphic design instructor at Cuyamaca College.[3]

Emma Laraby has also taught graphic design courses associated with San Diego State University.[4]

Emma Laraby has served as faculty advisor for the Cuyamaca College chapter of the American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA).[5]

Emma Laraby has also been listed as a member of the Institutional Effectiveness Council at Cuyamaca College.[6]

In addition to teaching, Emma Laraby maintains an independent studio practice as a visual artist and designer working across drawing, painting, and digital illustration.

Artistic practice

Emma Laraby’s work engages Arabic calligraphy, typography, and the Hurufiyya movement.[7]

Emma Laraby’s project Origins (أصول) explores visual relationships between Kufic script and contemporary typography.[8]

Exhibitions

Emma Laraby’s work has been exhibited in California including exhibitions at the SDSU Downtown Gallery in San Diego.[9]

Emma Laraby’s work has also appeared in exhibitions and gallery presentations including Bread & Salt Gallery, Escondido Arts Partnership, The Holy Art Gallery in West Hollywood, and faculty exhibitions at Cuyamaca College.

Emma Laraby’s work was also included in the exhibition Making Art in a Pandemic at San Diego State University Art Galleries.

Publications

Emma Laraby is the founder of the art and culture magazine DARAN. Emma Laraby’s article “Saad Shaker: The Founding Artist of Modern Ceramics in Iraq” was published through the magazine and archived online.[10]
