Comment: We need more WP:SIRS. This has good information and is a good start, but there's a lot of press release type coverage. Star Mississippi 15:13, 13 February 2026 (UTC)
The company name Eolus (iˈoːlʊs) is an older Swedish name form for the god of wind in Greek mythology, Aeolus. According to the Odyssey, he lived on the island of Aeolia and was ruler of the winds.
The company was founded by Bengt Simmingsköld. The CEO since 2012 is Per Witalisson[3]. The company has been listed on Nasdaq Stockholm since 2015.[4]
Business areas
The company's main operations are to develop and construct renewable energy and energy storage facilities. They also provide asset management services for operating facilities on behalf of clients.[5]
The Eolus Group consists of the parent company Eolus AB (publ), a number of subsidiaries, and companies formed as special purpose vehicles for individual projects.
Eolus is currently active in Sweden, Norway, Finland, USA, Poland, Estonia and Latvia.
History
Eolus was founded in 1990 in Osby, Sweden, by Bengt Simmingsköld, as one of the first commercial wind power developers in the country.[1] The company erected its first wind turbine — a 0.2 MW unit on Öland — in 1991, followed by a 0.6 MW turbine on Gotland in 1996, and its first 1.8 MW turbine in Skåne in 2002. In 2004, the company relocated its headquarters to Hässleholm and celebrated its 100th installed turbine.
In 2009, Eolus Vind was admitted to trading on Nasdaq First North, the same year it established its 200th wind turbine.[1] In 2015, the company transferred its listing to the main market of Nasdaq Stockholm and entered the US market.[4]
The company established operations in the United States through its subsidiary Eolus North America, Inc., headquartered in La Jolla, California.[6] In 2020, Eolus completed the sale of the 46.5 MW Wind Wall 1 wind farm in California to Cubico Sustainable Investments, its first U.S. project developed, financed, and constructed by the company.[7]
In June 2023, amid an industry-wide crisis over Siemens Gamesa onshore wind turbine defects, Eolus was quoted by Reuters stating that technical issues with Siemens Gamesa turbines were "no more frequent than with other manufacturers."[8][9]
In July 2023, the company disclosed a pipeline of approximately 10 GW in offshore wind capacity.[10] In October 2023, Eolus applied to build an offshore wind farm off the coast of Skåne.[11]
In December 2023, Eolus acquired a 2.3 GW pipeline of wind and solar projects in Finland.[12] The same month, the company submitted an application for the Najaderna offshore wind project in Sweden, with a planned capacity of 1.0–1.7 GW.[13]
In February 2024, the company submitted a permit application for an offshore wind project off the Blekinge coast.[14]
In June 2025, the company changed its name from Eolus Vind AB to Eolus Aktiebolag (publ).[15][16]
In January 2026, Eolus announced impairments on its project portfolio and revised its financial goals.[17]
