History
Founding and early years
Nicolas Estrella Sr. was born in Pinar del Río, Cuba in 1951 and emigrated to the United States in 1966.[1] He entered the insurance industry in 1976 as an agent for Ohio-based Provident Mutual Life Insurance, selling door to door.[1] In 1978, he co-founded Menendez & Estrella Insurance Agency, Inc. as vice president, specializing in selling automobile insurance to immigrant communities at a time when Florida's auto insurance mandates were minimal.[1]
By approximately 1980, Estrella had established Estrella Insurance as its own entity in Miami, building the business by serving the growing Hispanic community in South Florida. According to his son Nicolas Jr., the elder Estrella leveraged his surname — which means "star" in Spanish — as a marketing tool, telling prospective clients they could all pursue the same American dream.[2] The company grew steadily as a chain of corporate-owned retail insurance agency locations throughout South Florida, eventually expanding to around 40 corporate stores by the mid-2000s.[3]
Franchise expansion
Nicolas Estrella Sr. had experimented with a small number of franchise locations in the 1990s but did not substantially develop the model.[3] When Nicolas Estrella Jr. assumed leadership of the company in 2006, he noticed that the three existing franchise locations were performing well relative to corporate stores despite receiving minimal support, and that the profit margins on the franchise model were considerably higher.[3] This observation led him to convert the entire corporate retail operation to a franchise platform, a transition that took approximately two and a half years. Estrella Insurance formally began franchising in 2008.[4]
The franchise model accelerated the company's growth, with sales increasing across locations. By 2023, Estrella had expanded to over 200 franchise locations in 11 states, including Florida, California, Arizona, Texas, Colorado, Illinois, New York, and North Carolina.[3][5] The company reported system-wide premium sales exceeding $500 million.[3] Notable expansion milestones included entry into the Chicago market in early 2024 and the Dallas–Fort Worth and Houston markets.[6]
Confie acquisition (2023)
On May 9, 2023, Confie, headquartered in Huntington Beach, California, announced it had acquired Estrella Insurance.[7] The acquisition placed Estrella under Confie's Freeway Insurance division, significantly expanding Confie's footprint in Florida and its franchise operations. Estrella continued to operate under its own brand, and all existing employees were retained.[7]
At the time of the acquisition, Confie operated more than 750 retail locations across 23 states and claimed to be the largest privately owned personal lines insurance distribution company in the United States. The deal gave Confie three franchise-based insurance brands under its umbrella, alongside Freeway Insurance and Velox Insurance.[3] Nicolas Estrella Jr. stated that the partnership would allow the company to expand into new states at a pace that would not have been possible independently.[3]
Operations
Estrella Insurance operates as a multi-carrier insurance agency, offering policies from over 100 insurance carriers including nationally recognized providers such as Progressive.[8] The company's product portfolio includes auto, home, renters, commercial auto, business, workers' compensation, life, health, boat, RV, motorcycle, pet, and travel insurance.[9]
The company is headquartered in Miami, Florida and operates across multiple states, with the heaviest concentration of locations in Florida. Additional states with franchise locations include Arizona, California, Colorado, Georgia, Illinois, Massachusetts, New York, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Texas.[10]
A distinguishing operational feature is the company's bilingual marketing infrastructure, which produces advertising across television, radio, outdoor media, and digital channels in both English and Spanish.[5] As of March 2026, the company reported that 72% of its franchisees are women, more than double the national average of approximately 30%.[11]
Franchise model
Estrella Insurance operates as a franchise system, with the standard franchise agreement running for a ten-year term with renewal options.[4] The company is widely regarded as one of the more affordable franchise opportunities in the professional services sector.[10]
New franchisees complete an eight-week training program combining classroom instruction and on-the-job experience, primarily conducted at the company's Miami facilities.[10] Franchisees are granted a protected territory, typically defined as a one-mile driving radius from their approved location.[10] The company also offers veteran incentives in the form of discounted franchise fees.[4] Roughly half of Estrella franchisees have expanded beyond a single office, with the model designed to support multi-unit clustering within metropolitan markets.[5]
Recognition
Estrella Insurance has been included in Entrepreneur magazine's annual Franchise 500 ranking for 13 consecutive years as of 2025, and was ranked #1 in the insurance category in the 2025 edition.[12] In 2026, the company was ranked #137 on the Franchise 500 list.[6] The company was previously ranked #1 in its category in 2014, 2015, and 2017.[10] The company has also been recognized with multiple franchisee satisfaction awards.[10]
In May 2024, Entrepreneur magazine published a feature on founder Nicolas Estrella Sr.'s journey from Cuban immigrant to national franchise creator.[2]
