Eva Di Stefano (born 1 February 1950 in Palermo) is an Italian art historian and academic, specializing in contemporary art, the Vienna Secession, Expressionism, and Outsider Art.

Biography

After completing her studies in philosophy and art history between Palermo, Vienna, and New York City, she pursued her academic career at the University of Palermo. She served as a researcher from 1980 and subsequently, from 1992 to 2013, she held the position of Professor of Contemporary Art History at the University's Faculty of Letters.[1]

Her research primarily focuses on European art of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, employing an iconological approach centered on the relationship between art and the psyche. Her studies have concentrated on the transition from the symbolist and decorative aesthetics of fin de siècle Vienna to the psychological introspection of Expressionism.

Di Stefano has authored numerous essays and monographs dedicated to the historical avant-gardes. Among her notable publications is the volume Gustav Klimt. L’oro della seduzione (Giunti, 2006), a work that has been reprinted multiple times and translated in France and the United States.[2] This work dedicated to Gustav Klimt was published abroad by the French publisher Gründ (Paris, 2008)[3] and the American publisher Union Square & Co. (New York City, 2008).[4]

She has also extensively explored the work of Edvard Munch, examining his role as a precursor to Expressionism. This is demonstrated by her 1994 monograph for the magazine Art e Dossier, and her specialized studies such as Un irresistibile impulso: Munch e la Pathosformel in La Rivista di Engramma, and the volume Munch. La forma dell’ansia (Giunti, 2024).[5] Her research on Munch is widely used as a biographical and critical source in scholarly publications.

In the more recent phase of her activity, her interests have extended to Art Brut and irregular artistic expressions (Outsider Art). In May 2008, she founded the "Osservatorio Outsider Art" (Outsider Art Observatory) at the University of Palermo, which she currently directs. The Observatory is dedicated to the research and promotion of spontaneous and eccentric creativity, partnering with international institutions such as the Collection de l'art brut in Lausanne and the European Outsider Art Association (EOA).[6][7]

Di Stefano is a member of the European Outsider Art Association. Her work in the field of Irregular Art has been analyzed by the magazine Artribune, which included her among the leading Italian scholars in the sector.[8]
