Biography

Early life

Meijer was born in Hilversum and grew up in Soest in the Netherlands. From a young age he was passionate about sports, especially winter sports. He studied at the Opleiding voor Sportleiders (CIOS), worked for several years as a ski instructor in Austria and competed in international ski competitions, where he won several prizes.[1][2]

In 2012 Meijer was involved in a serious skiing accident during a freestyle jump in Austria. After landing badly he sustained a complete spinal cord injury, which left him paralysed. Despite the severity of the injury, his passion for the mountains motivated him to continue skiing, and more than a year later he returned to the slopes using a sit-ski.[1][3][4]

Career

Following his return to skiing, Meijer began competing internationally in para-alpine skiing events in the sitting category. He trained with the Dutch national team and regularly trained at the National Sports Centre Papendal while building his career in the sport.[1][2]

At the 2022 Winter Paralympics in Beijing, Meijer represented the Netherlands in para-alpine skiing. He finished seventh in the super-G and tenth in the giant slalom events in the sitting classification.[1][5]>[6]

In addition to his sporting career, Meijer has also been involved in promoting wheelchair skills and mobility training. Through the Wheelchair Skills Team he helps organise training sessions and demonstrations to teach wheelchair users practical techniques and improve accessibility awareness.[7][8]
