Early life and education

Flávio da Silva Dutka was born in Paraná and moved to Rondônia during childhood. In Porto Velho, he combined teaching activities with artistic creation, establishing connections with riverside communities along the Lower Madeira River.[5] His academic background in History and his experience as a teacher have influenced his visual production, exploring themes of memory and regional identity.

Artistic production

Dutka's work includes painting, drawing, and illustration, with recurring references to the Amazonian environment. Academic studies have analyzed series such as Um Lago Chamado Cuniã, Inverno Amazônico, Roc-oco, Metamorfose, and Piracema. In 2026, Soniamar dos Santos Salin examined these series through the concept of "relational cartography," discussing relationships between materiality, gesture, form, and territory.[6] Other academic studies explore themes of ancestry, collective memory, and territorial identity in his work.[7]

His work as an illustrator includes contributions to magazines,[8] literary works,[9] and children's books.[10][11]

Digital art, collectives, and international circulation

In the early 2000s, Dutka joined the Movimento Coletivo Madeirista and participated in the digital art project Inventário das Sombras in Porto Velho, which combined digital photography, mail art, collage, digital printing, performance, and urban interventions.[12]

Dutka's artworks were incorporated into the architectural project Casa Entre Águas by architect Thiago Marques, presented at the Brazilian Architecture Biennial (BAB) in São Paulo.[13] In 2008, he represented Brazil in the international exhibition Draw In held in Helsinki, Finland.[14]

Exhibitions

Dutka began participating in exhibitions in the 1990s, including events such as Rondônia Culture Week (1991), Amazônia (1992), Studio Aberto Culture Fair (1992), and Metáforas (1998). He also represented Rondônia in the exhibition Brazilian Artists held at the Federal Senate.[15]

In Rondônia, his solo and group exhibitions include Piracema (2018–2019),[16] Tríade (2020),[17] Tons de Beira (2021),[18] Pinturas (2022),[19] and Cuniã Onírico (2022).[20] In subsequent years, his exhibitions included Alquimia (2023),[21] Caleidoscópio (2024),[22] and Microcosmos (2025).[23] In late 2025, he organized an exhibition at the Lago Cuniã Extractive Reserve,[24] followed by O Cacau Cor de Rosa in 2026.[25]

Documentary and recognition

Dutka's artistic career was featured in the documentary film Dutka – Preciso Falar de Arte, released in 2022.[26][27]

In 2026, he was awarded the Madeira-Mamoré Commendation, the highest honor awarded by the municipality of Porto Velho.[4]
