Friends That Invest (formerly Girls That Invest) is a New Zealand-based financial education platform and podcast that was launched in 2020 by Simran Kaur and Sonya Gupthan focusing on personal finance and investing topics.[1][2]

Podcast and platform

Girls That Invest was first released by Kaur and Gupthan in August 2020 and by late 2021 it reached over 100,000 monthly downloads and entered the business charts of the USA, Canada, New Zealand and the UK.[3][4] By April 2022 the podcast had reached a total of one million downloads.[5] The Spinoff featured the platform as part of a women-led financial education movement in New Zealand and highlighting its role in encouraging women and people of colour to engage with investing.[1] Business Insider published that by 2023, Kaur had developed Girls That Invest into a media company that made money via online courses, sponsorship, and social media content.[2]

Kaur‘s book Girls That Invest: Your Guide to Financial Independence Through Shares and Stocks was released in 2022 by Wiley.[6] March 2023, Kaur gave a speech at an event at the UK Houses of Parliament celebrating International Women‘s Day.[7][8]

Rebrand and growth

The platform was rebranded as Friends That Invest in 2025. In the same year Wiley published a second edition of the book under the title, Friends That Invest: Your Guide to Financial Independence Through Shares and Stocks.[9] Friends That Invest featured in Deloitte Fast 50 (New Zealand) for 2025.[10]

Recognition

In 2023 Kaur and Gupthan were included in the Forbes 30 Under 30 Asia list under Media, Marketing & Advertising category.[11]In 2024, Kaur was awarded the University of Canterbury Young New Zealander of the Year at the New Zealander of the Year Awards.[12] [13] She was named the Oceania winner at the 2024 Cartier Women's Initiative Awards.[14]
