Life and career

From 1971 to 1976, Laux studied mathematics at the University of Tübingen. After completing his studies, he worked as a research associate at the Astronomical Institute in Tübingen, where he managed and programmed the computer-controlled data processing for an X-ray experiment (HEXE = High Energy X-Ray Experiment). Following his doctorate (1981), he worked as a systems analyst at Tandem Computers. In 1983 he started an IT company for systems analysis and commercial software development and worked for leading companies in Southwest Germany and Switzerland. From 1986 to 2015, he held a professorship in Databases and Information Systems at Reutlingen University and was one of the founding members of the Faculty of Computer Science. In 2010, he supervised the faculty's first joint doctoral program in collaboration with a the University of the West of Scotland (UWS). This kind of cooperation was the first one in Germany in collaboration with a foreign University. He participated in the EU-funded research projects DBTechPro and DBTechExt, which aimed to improve and standardize database education at higher education institutions, and made significant contributions to the harmonization of higher education within the European Union.

He is a member of the steering committee of the International Conference on Advances in Databases, Knowledge, and Data Applications (DBKDA) and a co-editor of the DBKDA publications.[1][2]

Research focus

His research focuses on data models, transaction management, data analysis, and data mining. He authored research papers on transaction processing and, starting in 2016, published work jointly with Malcolm Crowe on the implementation of a property graph model and the graph query language GQL for the database management system Pyrrho; using these, he implemented the LDBC Financial Benchmark. He developed the Typed Graph Model, a hypergraph data model with schema support. Some ideas (including n-ary edge types) of this model were used in the working draft of ISO/IEC 39075 for the GQL specification.

Honors and awards

  • 2010: Fellow of the International Academy, Research and Industry Association (IARIA)[3]
  • 2012: Research Award from Reutlingen University[4] `
