Fulham Heights is 2017/2018 AfriSam-SAIA Award winner for Sustainable Architecture and Innovation. The property has been noted for its efforts to promote urban regeneration and community development.[1] This incremental urbanist project emerged from Corridors of Freedom initiative and runs as a mixed-use scheme with a small 495m² footprint.[2]
Designed by Thomas Chapman and located in Brixton, in a notoriously high-crime area, the conversion of a Victorian era corner shop was effected by Local Studio. [3]
Founded in 2012, this South African Public Architecture practice[4] installed a two story high structural steel frame within the walls of Victorian cornershop. Cladding was a combination of corrugated steel panels and translucent polycarbonate. The steel structure above sits in stark contrast with the original concrete façade and colonnades below. [5] The building is mixed-use and combines professional offices space, accommodation, the art residency Lapa [6] and a restaurant below.[7]. This public space has held book launches, [8] bike workshops [9] and supported other community events.
