Early life and background
John & Jane (2005)
Castinho came to wider attention when he was chosen as one of six subjects in John & Jane, a feature-length documentary directed by Ashim Ahluwalia and produced by Future East.[3] The film follows a group of night-shift call centre workers in Mumbai who answer calls from American customers, adopting American names, accents, and personas as part of their employment.[4] Castinho appeared in the film under his own given name, "Glen", and is among the opening subjects in the documentary's portrait-based structure.[5]
The film was shot entirely on 35mm widescreen and premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2005, followed by a European premiere at the Berlin International Film Festival in 2006.[6] It went on to win the National Film Award for Best Direction of a First Non-Feature Film at the 53rd National Film Awards.[7]
Career as a digital colourist
Castinho began his professional career in post-production in 2003, initially working as a telecine operator and as a product specialist for FilmLight in India.[8] In 2007, he relocated to Belgium, where he consulted on and helped implement a 4K digital intermediate pipeline at Galaxy Studios.[8]
He subsequently moved to Poland, where he joined Alvernia Studios in Kraków as Senior Colorist and Head of DI. He developed the studio's DI department into one of the leading post-production facilities in the region, establishing workflows with laboratories including Deluxe (UK/USA), Technicolor UK, and Barrandov Studio Laboratory in Prague.[8] His technical setup at Alvernia included a Baselight EIGHT system, graded against Sony SRDX 4K projectors and HD Cinetal monitors, integrated with Northlight 2 and Truelight colour management.[2]
Essential Killing (2010)
Castinho served as digital colourist on Essential Killing (2010), a survival thriller directed by Jerzy Skolimowski and shot by cinematographer Adam Sikora across Israel, Poland, and Norway. The film received the Special Jury Prize and the Volpi Cup for Best Actor at the 67th Venice International Film Festival, and went on to win additional prizes at the Mar del Plata International Film Festival and the Polish Film Awards.[9]
Bhaag Milkha Bhaag (2013)
Castinho was the digital colourist on Bhaag Milkha Bhaag (2013), a biographical sports drama directed by Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra and based on the life of Indian Olympic athlete Milkha Singh. The film's narrative spans multiple time periods and locations, each requiring distinct colour treatment to complement the cinematography of Binod Pradhan. Director Mehra noted that the production sought "a colorist who would be able to enrich the vibrant hues of Pradhan's cinematography... and who could treat all segments of the film with sensitivity and accuracy."[10] The film's cinematography received the Best Cinematography award at the Star Guild Awards 2014.[11] The film earned over ₹1 billion at the box office within four weeks of release.[12]
Later career
As a finishing colourist, Castinho has worked across a wide range of international productions, collaborating closely with directors of photography from initial camera tests through to final look development. These include Voyagers (2021), a science fiction thriller directed by Neil Burger and starring Colin Farrell, Tye Sheridan and Lily-Rose Depp;[13] The Performance (2023), a period drama directed by Shira Piven and based on a short story by Arthur Miller, starring Jeremy Piven and Robert Carlyle;[14] and the horror trilogy The Strangers Chapters 1, 2 and 3 (2024–2026), directed by Renny Harlin and distributed by Lionsgate Films.[15]
His Indian credits as a Finishing Colorist include Asuran (2019), Beast (2022), Leo (2023), and Viduthalai Part II.[8]
