Career
Prato began writing about music in 1997.[1] Over time, he became a frequent contributor to online and print publications covering rock music and popular culture.[2]
He has written for outlets such as Songfacts,[3] Rolling Stone,[4] Billboard,[5] Classic Rock,[6] AllMusic,[7] and other music-focused publications, where his work has included artist biographies, album reviews, and interviews with musicians.
In addition to journalism, Prato has authored over 50 books since 2008,[8] focusing on the history of rock bands and musicians, as well as titles about professional sports teams. The metal-rules site once said about Prato, "American author Greg Prato seems hellbent on challenging Canadian Martin Popoff for global supremacy in the field of 'Most Hard Rock/Heavy Metal books published'."[9] The Seattle Post-Intelligencer also once said, "Prato is something of a master at the art of the oral biography."[10]
In addition to his own books, he has co-written books with artists, including Meat Puppets[11], Primus [12], and King's X [13].
Prato has also been a guest on radio, TV, and podcasts, including appearances on The Howard Stern Wrap-Up Show, [14] Eddie Trunk Live,[15] and Kennedy Saves the World Podcast.[16] He has also been interviewed for such DVD titles as Pearl Jam: Under Review.[17]
Throughout his career, Prato has conducted interviews with a wide range of musicians, including Eddie Vedder, William Shatner, John Lydon, George Clinton, Ronnie James Dio, and Ace Frehley.[18] Additionally, he has interviewed renowned sports figures, including Joe Klecko, Mark Gastineau, Phil Niekro, Goose Gossage, Al Arbour, and Bryan Trottier.[19]
Prato has also penned liner notes for various music releases, including the Judas Priest box set The Complete Albums Collection,[20] the Devo CD/DVD Devo Live 1980, and the Primus CD deluxe reissue of Sailing the Seas of Cheese.[21]
Prato has listed Queen's Queen II and Blind Melon's Soup as two of his favorite rock albums of all-time,[22] and Please Kill Me: The Uncensored Oral History of Punk by Legs McNeil and Gillian McCain as his favorite book of all-time.[23]
