Groove is a dance competition and convention company that hosts competitions in the U.S. The company was founded in 2012 by Daniel DeFranco[1], and is a part of the OneBeat Dance Brands organization.[2]


Competition format

Groove hosts regional events in multiple cities across the U.S. and three National Final events in Atlantic City, NJ, Nashville, TN, and Orlando, FL.[3]Groove operates under the standards set by the United States Dance Regulators (USDR) for division size, age groups, and categories.

Age groups

  • Mini: Ages 6 and under
  • Petite: Ages 7-9
  • Junior: Ages 10-12
  • Teen: Ages 13-15
  • Senior: Ages 16-19
  • Adult: Ages 20+ [4]

Divisions

  • Solo: 1 dancer
  • Duo/Trio: 2-3 dancers
  • Small Group: 4-9 dancers
  • Large Group: 10-19 dancers
  • Line: 20+ dancers
  • Production: 15+ dancers[4]

Performance levels

  • Spirit Level: Geared toward dancers who have a physical, sensory, or mental disability.
  • Novice Level: Geared toward dancers with very limited, to no competition experience. It is intended for dancers who train less than three hours per week. Novice level dancers may compete in only 1 solo. A dancer in the novice division may compete in no more than 5 routines.
  • Intermediate Level: Geared toward dancers with limited competition experience. It is intended for those who train four to five hours per week. An intermediate level dancer may compete in no more than 2 solos. A dancer in the intermediate division may compete in no more than 8 routines.
  • Advanced Level: Geared toward dancers who train six or more hours per week. Advanced dancers may compete in an unlimited number of routines, with an unlimited number of solos. Dancers who wish to qualify for the National Opening Number, and compete for cash prizes, must be in the advanced division.[4]

Conventions

Groove produces nine, one-day conventions in the Fall. Conventions include five genres of dance; lyrical, tap, jazz, hip hop, and contemporary. [5]

Groove is listed as a participating member of the Industry Dance Awards (IDA).[6]

Groove Dance Competition has been featured in the dance industry publication, Dance Informa. Dance Informa quotes "Groove Dance Competition and Convention has been renowned on the competition circuit for its high-energy, high-production-value events."[7]

Founder Daniel DeFranco has also been featured in business and industry podcast, Dance To Success, discussing the development and growth of the organization.[8]
