Biography

Dr. Hari Prasad Timilsina (born 18 May 1966) is a Nepali poet, lyricist, fiction writer, critic, and essayist known for his progressive and romanticist literary orientation. He was born in Kansikandh–1, Takuri, Dailekh (now Mahabu Rural Municipality–2), Nepal, to mother Kamaladevi Upadhyay and father Rameshwar Upadhyay. His family later migrated to Geruwa–2, Bardiya, where he completed his early schooling at Janata Secondary School, Gola. Timilsina earned an MA in Nepali from Tribhuvan University and completed a PhD in Nepali from Nepal Sanskrit University. His doctoral research focuses on Rasa theory in the epic poems of Siddhicharan Shrestha.

He began his professional career in Nepal’s civil service in 1988 (2045 B.S.) and later resigned in 2003 (2060 B.S.) to pursue academia. He is currently an Associate Professor at Mahendra Multiple Campus under Tribhuvan University. Beyond academia, Timilsina has held several leadership roles. He served as Committee Chairperson of the Bheri Literary Society, Central Committee, Nepalgunj (2009–2024); Member of the Academy Council, Kamaladi, Kathmandu (2014–2022); and Central Vice President of the Public Campus Professors Association, Nepal (2006–2009).

Timilsina writes poetry, songs, short stories, essays, literary criticism, and research on folklore and culture. He is recognized as a socially conscious realist storyteller and an analytical critic committed to the development of Nepali language, literature, and higher education. He is proficient in Nepali, Awadhi, Maithili, Bhojpuri, Tharu, Hindi, and English. Having developed an interest in art and literature from his childhood, Timilsina formally began his literary journey in 2042 B.S. (1985 A.D.). Since the 2060s B.S. (early 2000s A.D.), he has remained continuously active in literature and, upon returning to Banke around 2080 B.S., has played a distinctive role as an exemplary, inspirational, and leading creative figure in the fields of language, literature, criticism, and literary creation in the region.

Over the past 38 years, he has so far published seven books, conducted four formal research works, and carried out social, cultural, and linguistic studies of marginalized and endangered communities such as the Loponmukh Khuna, Rajhi, Kusbadiya, Sonaha, and others. Similarly, he has undertaken research to bring to light the lives, personalities, and contributions of figures from Banke, Bardiya, and the western region whose works had not yet been adequately studied, including Prem Prakash Malla, Prakash Rajapuri and Abdul Latif Shauq, among others. Timilsina has written numerous poems in classical metrical forms, many of which, along with essays and other writings, have been published in various outlets. Fundamentally aligned with the romantic-progressive poetic tradition, his works prominently express patriotism, vivid depictions of natural beauty, humanistic values, opposition to social distortions and anomalies, resistance to feudal tendencies, and protest against social exploitation, oppression, suppression, and superstition. His writings advocate for equality, justice, social reform, and transformative, revolutionary consciousness.

In addition to his creative writing, he has played leadership roles in various organizations, contributing significantly to institutional literary development. Through both literary and non-literary journalism, Timilsina has made notable qualitative and quantitative contributions to the advancement of language, literature, and intellectual discourse in the Banke district, Lumbini province and across Nepal. Career

Believing that education is the light of the nation, society, and family, his family migrated in 2028 B.S. (1971/72 A.D.) to Geruwa Rural Municipality–2, Gola, in Bardiya district. At the age of five, after moving to the Terai, he received his schooling at Janata Secondary School, Gola. He passed the SLC in 2042 B.S. (1985/86 A.D.), completed his Proficiency Certificate in 2048 B.S. (1991/92 A.D.), earned his Bachelor’s degree in 2053 B.S. (1996/97 A.D.), and his Master’s degree in 2058 B.S. (2001/02 A.D.). His PhD research titled “Rasa Theory in the Epic Poems of Siddhicharan Shrestha” has reached its final stage. He went to Kathmandu in 2042 B.S. to pursue higher education; however, due to his mother’s death that same year, he enrolled late at a private college, Namuna Machhindra Campus, in the I.Com program. In 2043 B.S., as his elder brother contested in local elections, he returned home from Kathmandu to assist in the campaign, which interrupted his studies that year. Known affectionately in his village as “Kanchha Baje” and “Kanchha Kaka,” he was dear to everyone. In the same year, he suffered from tuberculosis, which prevented him from continuing higher education.

After spending about six months in Kathmandu, he applied for a government position under the national nutrition program. When his name was selected in 2045 B.S. (1988/89 A.D.), he began his professional career. While posted in Birgunj in 2045 B.S., he enrolled in the evening program at Hari Khetan Multiple Campus and completed his Intermediate (I.A.). After being transferred to Nepalgunj in 2048 B.S., he enrolled in a Bachelor’s program at Mahendra Multiple Campus, but was soon transferred again to Dhangadhi, Kailali. There, he attended morning classes at Kailali Multiple Campus and completed his Bachelor’s degree in 2052 B.S. (1995/96 A.D.) through Mahendra Multiple Campus, Nepalgunj. Due to the demands of his job, he was unable to attend regular classes and paused his studies for two years. Later, while on leave, he completed his Master’s degree in Nepali from Kirtipur, Kathmandu, in 2058 B.S. After being transferred to Banke in 2049 B.S., he began residing in Banke, establishing permanent residence there from 2056 B.S. Believing that no profession is more meaningful than teaching for exchanging intellectual ideas and knowledge, he resigned from his job in 2060 B.S. (2003/04 A.D.) and entered the teaching profession. He is currently an Associate Professor at Mahendra Multiple Campus under Tribhuvan University.

From his primary school years in the village, he recalls spontaneously singing various songs and writing poems. His public literary journey appears to have formally begun in 2042 B.S. (1985/86 A.D.). During school poetry competitions, Timilsina was known for his confident recitations and never yielded easily to competitors; he regularly presented poems at annual literary programs. Inspired by his mother’s recitation of the Ramayana, he developed a motivation to compose poetry in classical metrical forms. His first formally published poem, titled “Vishram Garnu Kaha?” (“Where to Rest?”), appeared in Kanchan Quarterly in 2042 B.S. Thereafter, he continuously published hundreds of poems, songs, short stories, essays, and critical writings in various periodicals. However, his publication of books began after he resigned from his government service and became almost fully devoted to literature. In 2066 B.S. (2009/10 A.D.), he published his first book-length work, a metrical poetry collection titled Ek Aalok Anek Tarang (“One Light, Many Waves”). [7]

He has served as Central Vice President of the Public Campus Professors Association, Nepal (2006–2009), followed by Central Member of Jansahitya Sangh, Nepal (2007–2009). From 2009 to 2015, he was a Central Member of the Progressive Writers Association, Nepal, and from 2009 to 2024, he held the position of Committee Chairperson of the Bheri Literary Society in Nepalgunj. During the same period, he was associated with Midwestern Multiple Campus (2009–2013) and Paurakhi Multipurpose Cooperative Society Limited (2009–2020). He served as a Member of the Academy Council in Kamaladi, Kathmandu (2014–2022) and was involved with Ritambhara National Daily Publication since 2014. Most recently, he has been serving as Secretary of the Progressive Writers Association, Nepal from 2024 to the present, and he has also contributed as a member of the National Folk Culture Federation, Central Committee, Kathmandu, Nepal.
